Day -503 — Daily Haibun Journey — Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth was born into slavery and given the name Isabella Baumfree, the later she chose for herself. After She escaped to freedom with her infant daughter but had to leave the other children behind because they were not free under the emancipation act until they were at least eighteen. She walked away to freedom because she had been promised emancipation if she worked the year and would be good, but he changed his mind.
Isabella became a Christian and changed her name to Sojourner Truth. She became an evangelist and then later an abolitionist and a crusader for women’s rights. She traveled and lectured and published a book of her life as a slave. During the Civil War she recruited African Americans for the Union army.
Truth has the distinction of being the first African American to win a lawsuit against a white man. She sued and won when her son was illegally sold.
