Barbara Jordan was a prominent politician and civil rights leader. She was the first black woman from the South elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Her remarkably incisive speech during the Nixon impeachment hearings as a member of the House Judiciary Committee gained her national attention. She became the first African American Woman to give a keynote speech at a Democratic National Convention. in 1976.mShe was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1990.and In 1994 she and received a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
